Lost Filling or Crown

Your filling or crown fell out — here is what to do right now, and why you should call before the end of the day.

You were eating dinner, chewing gum, or maybe just going about your day, and you felt something come loose. A filling popped out or a crown came off in your hand. It is unsettling, but it is also one of the most common dental emergencies we see at Bedford Family Dentistry — and in most cases, it is very fixable. Call us at 540-586-8080 so we can get you in quickly.

When a filling or crown comes out, the tooth underneath is exposed and vulnerable. The dentin layer beneath your enamel is softer and more sensitive, which is why you may notice sharp sensitivity to hot, cold, or sweet foods right away. More importantly, bacteria can now reach parts of the tooth that were sealed off, which means the risk of new decay or infection starts climbing the longer the tooth stays exposed.

If your crown came off in one piece, save it. Rinse it gently and bring it with you. In many cases, Dr. Maharaj can clean the crown, check the tooth underneath, and recement it in the same visit. If the crown is cracked or the tooth has changed, you may need a new crown — but you will hear exactly why before anything happens.

If a filling fell out, you will probably need a new filling or, depending on how much tooth structure remains, a crown to protect what is left. Dr. Maharaj will look at the tooth, explain what he sees, and walk you through your options. You will not be pushed into anything you are not ready for.

While you are waiting for your appointment, avoid chewing on that side. If the tooth is sensitive, a small piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax pressed gently over the opening can help temporarily. Over-the-counter pain relievers can take the edge off any discomfort. Do not try to glue the crown back on with household adhesive — dental cement from a drugstore is okay as a very short-term measure if you cannot get in right away, but it is not a substitute for a real repair.

Whether you live right here in downtown Bedford or out toward Montvale, you do not need to drive to a bigger city for this. Your dental home on East Main Street handles lost fillings and crowns every week, and we will fit you in as quickly as we can.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I glue my crown back on at home?

You can use temporary dental cement from a drugstore as a short-term fix if you absolutely cannot get in right away. Do not use household glue or super glue — they are not safe for your mouth and can make the repair harder later. The real solution is getting to us so Dr. Maharaj can check the tooth and recement or replace the crown properly.

Is a lost filling or crown really an emergency?

It is not life-threatening, but it does need attention soon — ideally within a day or two. The exposed tooth is vulnerable to sensitivity, new decay, and fracture. The sooner you come in, the more likely we can save the tooth and possibly reuse the original crown.

Why did my filling or crown fall out?

The most common reasons are normal wear over time, decay forming underneath the restoration, biting into something hard, or grinding your teeth at night. Sometimes the cement simply fails after years of service. Dr. Maharaj will figure out what happened and make sure the replacement is set up to last longer.
