Home Care Instructions

Your care does not stop when you leave the chair. Here is clear, straightforward guidance for taking care of your smile at home.

Your Daily Routine

Brush twice a day for two full minutes with a soft-bristled toothbrush and fluoride toothpaste. Gentle, steady circles work better than hard scrubbing.

Floss at least once a day, guiding it gently between each tooth and along the gumline (where bacteria like to hide).

An antimicrobial mouthwash (the kind that fights bacteria, not just freshens breath) can give you extra protection.

Swap out your toothbrush every three to four months, or sooner if the bristles start to splay.

If you use an electric toothbrush, let it do the work — you just guide it along. No scrubbing needed.

After a Filling

Your lip and cheek may feel numb for one to three hours. Hold off on eating until the feeling comes back so you do not accidentally bite yourself.

A little sensitivity to hot, cold, or pressure is normal for a few days and usually fades on its own.

If your bite feels uneven once the numbness wears off, give us a call at 540-586-8080 — a quick adjustment is all it takes.

Go easy on hard or sticky foods around the new filling for the first 24 hours.

After a Tooth Is Removed (Extraction)

Bite gently on the gauze pad for 30 to 45 minutes to help a clot form.

For the first 24 hours, avoid spitting, using a straw, or smoking — these can dislodge the clot your body needs to heal.

An ice pack on the outside of your cheek (20 minutes on, 20 minutes off) helps keep swelling down.

Stick to soft foods for two to three days, then ease back to your normal diet as the area heals.

Starting the day after the procedure, rinse gently with warm salt water a few times a day.

Take any prescribed or recommended pain medication as directed. If something feels off, call us.

After a Crown or Bridge

Your temporary crown (the one you wear while the permanent one is being made) is held on with temporary cement. Avoid sticky or hard foods so it stays in place.

If a temporary crown comes loose, call us right away — do not try to reattach it with household glue.

Once your permanent crown or bridge is in place, brush and floss as you normally would.

For bridges, a floss threader or small interdental brush helps you clean under the false tooth (called a pontic) where food can collect.

Some sensitivity for a few days after placement is normal and should ease on its own.

After Teeth Whitening

For 48 hours after your treatment, steer clear of dark-colored foods and drinks — coffee, tea, red wine, berries, and tomato sauce are the usual suspects.

A little tooth sensitivity is common and usually goes away within a few days.

A sensitivity toothpaste can help if you notice any tenderness.

Keep up your daily brushing and flossing routine, and periodic touch-ups will help your results last.
